“We Must Create Opportunities For Young People” – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo believes it is important for every government to create opportunities for its people, especially the young generation.

Professor Osinbajo made the emphasis in his remarks on Tuesday at the launching of the North-East Humanitarian Innovation Hub in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

He noted that it was important for Nigerians to think about some of the issues affecting the country and be introspective to address them.

The Vice President, however, explained that the hub was designed to create an enabling environment that is conducive for such thinking and innovation.

“I want to say that l am totally convinced and so, l believe that the way forward for our country is innovation and technology,” he said in a speech released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande.

“The young people who we see every day, who are able to do all these incredible things, represent the future of our country and represent it so dramatically, graphically that we are all confident that where we are going is indeed a place of great prosperity and abundance, having regards to all that we see today.”

To this end, Osinbajo said the Federal Government is really committed to working through with the innovation hubs, in line with its Social Intervention Programme.

He revealed that government plans to establish six innovation hubs across the country, adding that they would open a climate change innovation hub at the Pan-African University in Lagos in a couple of weeks’ time.

The Vice President said they have begun a school challenge – university and polytechnic innovations’ challenge – which would involve students from across the country.

He said: “As part of that, we are building six university connected innovation hubs across the country, starting with the University of Lagos. The building has already started.

“This is going to be really outstanding hubs with some four floors using containers and there is going to be a lot of innovation. Just the building and the concept alone is extremely innovative and, of course, it’s been done by the young men and women who will be using the hub itself.”

Professor Osinbajo informed the audience at the event that government was constituting a council which include the young men and women, to help shape effective policy around technology, innovation and creativity.

He, however, stressed the need for Nigeria to know and understand how such intellectual capacity can be taken within the framework of its law and the framework of the international law practice.

The Vice President thanked those who supported the government to ensure the success of the hub, especially the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

He consequently declared the North-East Humanitarian Innovation Hub open for the benefit of the people of the region and the Nigerian people.

The 34-year old Dosumu was on Monday 5th June, 2018, convicted and will have to serve 18 months in prison without an option of fine as handed down by Ejigbo Magistrates court, Lagos.

It was gathered that the sentence made it the sixth time he had been sent to prison.

The Ogun State-born Dosumu said that he was trained as a vulcanizer, he started work but had no clients to patronise him and so he went into full robbery.

The father of one said he was used to prison conditions because he had spent many months and years for over five times before he was convicted again on Monday.

He said that when he was convicted and sent to prison, his wife abandoned him with the children and he had to steal to take care of them.

The convicted Dosumu was arrested after he burgled a house and stole a laptop belonging to one Dike Charles at 24 Falaka Street, Graceland Estate, Idimu, Lagos.

“Expect War If You Try To Impeach Buhari” – Reps Member, Kazaure Fires Warning To Colleagues

The National Assembly’s alleged plan to impeach President Muhamamdu Buhari, has been vehemently rejected by a federal lawmaker who asked his colleagues to expect war.

A House of Representatives member, Rep. Muhammadu Kazaure (Jigawa-APC), has disassociated himself from the National Assembly’s plan to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

A joint executive session of both chambers of the Assembly earlier on Tuesday passed a 12-point condition for the president to address urgently or face the invocation of the powers of the legislature.

At a news conference shortly after the ultimatum to the president by the lawmakers, Kazaure said that he would not be part of such decision.

”Nobody will impeach the president as long as we are alive in this House because that day, it will be a war day,” he said.

He said that there were senators and members of the house who would not support such move.

The lawmaker urged Buhari to intervene in the matter in the interest of the country and the All Progressive Congress (APC).

”I am sure the president will take serious action and the whole thing will stop. You are aware that in 2015, we didn’t have money, we didn’t have power and we never intimidated anybody.

”God gave us this power; so, there is no need for this government to intimidate anybody because of re-election matter or any other reason.

”By now, we should try and be good to people; this is what we should concentrate on,” he said.

He said that with the increase in oil price, the focus of government now should be on how to give Nigerians better welfare package.

”The people are complaining not only about security but poverty, hunger; even in my constituency, the people are complaining about this.”

Kazaure said that he was not in support of Buhari allowing some people to create problems for him by frustrating those who had helped the party to win the 2015 elections.

”These people have assisted us; we don’t want them to go; we want them to come together and assist the president again. So, the president must call those people to order because we will lose many votes if this crisis continues.

“Oyegun Should Go To Jail” – Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has declared that going by the way Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has managed the affairs of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the outgoing APC national chairman was apparently overrated by leaders of the party who had allowed him to succeed Chief Bisi Akande as party chairman.

Okorocha who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo maintained that Chief Oyegun has taken the Party several years backward to the extent that today, there is no State chapter of the party where there is no crisis or factions.

A statement by Onwuemeodo read in part, “The way Chief Oyegun has pursued the elongation of his tenure also showed how selfish and greedy, he is. He is not interested in the well-being or future of the party, but only interested in staying put as the National Chairman of the Party. And that is why he is after anybody who opposed the tenure elongation.

“The worst thing that would have happened to APC is to allow Chief Oyegun to continue as the National Chairman of the Party. It would have been worst for the Party.

Chief Akande never tried to destroy the party when he was leaving as the pioneer Chairman, but Oyegun wants to destroy the party because he is leaving. He is not patriotic.”

He continued, “In the case of Imo, he disobeyed two court orders with regard to the congresses in Imo and the inauguration of strange elements as the state officials of the party just to get at Governor Okorocha because of the issue of elongation.

And we have no option now than to ask our lawyers to press for his imprisonment and that of Osita Izunaso and all those who were involved in the lawlessness.”

The statement averred that the only thing Chief Oyegun has achieved in his ‘anger against Governor Okorocha is encouraging elements with no electoral value like Osita Okechukwu and those from Imo to be insulting the Governor. And these are people who cannot win their booths in an election’.

The same elements, he said, came together during the Anambra State governorship election.

“The governor stayed away and at the end of the day, they could not justify their noise making. They have also started again. And these are people who have been running election since 2007 and have not won any”, he said.

The statement warned that Imo APC members would not tolerate factionalization of the party.

“In case Chief Oyegun does not know, Imo APC members won’t allow any faction. The APC in Imo and even in the South-East is Governor Okorocha’s making.

And it will be foolish of anybody to think that he would build the party and allow cowards to take it over. If they have the political strength, let them go and pick a party and present a candidate, and it will be very interesting”, the statement stressed.

Mikel Obi Reveals What Super Eagles Will Do To Czech Republic

Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel has vowed that Gernot Rohr’s men will give their best to get a good result against Czech Republic in Wednesday’s pre-World Cup friendly at Rudolf-Tonn-Stadion Stadium in Austria.

The former Chelsea midfielder, however, said Rohr’s side will avoid repeating the same mistakes that contributed to their 2-1 loss to England on Saturday when they face Czech.

Eagles conceded two goals from Gary Cahill and Harry Kane in the first half before responding with an Alex Iwobi strike after the break as the Three Lions defeated the three times African champions in front of their home fans last weekend.

”The game against England was a good test for us, we played well in the second half,” Mikel said in an interview with the Nigerian Federation.

”First half we didn’t get going but second half we started playing. We scored the goal and created more chances to win the game.

”Hopefully, tomorrow we can start well and get a good result against Cezch. I urge Nigerians to keep supporting us.”

The kick off time for the match is 2:00pm.

After the game against Czech, Nigeria will head out to Russia to begin their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign underway in less than two weeks.

‘What I Saw In Super Eagles’ Camp’ - Taribo West

A former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West has stated that he saw the spirit of the US ’94 in the current national team side when he visited their camp.

He also provided reasons he believes the team fell 2-1 to England at Wembley last Saturday.

West also spoke on what may be the performance of coach Gernot Rohr’s men when they file out against the Czech Republic this afternoon.

According to the former Eagles star, the team will put up a better performance against the Czech Republic in Austria on Wednesday.

Taribo, who represented Nigeria at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, said the Nigerian squad would have learnt from their mistakes against England, saying he expects a more assured outing against the Czechs.

“In the first half, the Eagles had so much respect for the English and weren’t coordinated in the middle and sometimes at the back, but all that changed after the coach made some changes and we saw what the team could do. The Czech game would be different, I expect to see a better Eagles side on Wednesday,” Taribo told Punch.

He also backed the team to do well at the World Cup in Russia despite questions over the team’s ability to advance from Group D, which includes two-time world champions Argentina , Croatia and Iceland.

“This team will surprise bookmakers and people who have written them off. I had a chance meeting with some members of the squad in Abuja before they headed for London and I can see the spirit of the 1994 set in them. I believe they will do well in Russia.”

‘Nigerian Army Was Never Soft On Biafrans’ - Fani Kayode Mocks President Buhari

Femi Fani-Kayode, the former minister of aviation has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari over his statement on the Nigeria/Biafra civil war.

Buhari had during a meeting with the Red Cross Society at the presidential villa said that the Nigerian Army was soft on Biafrans during the Civil War.

Countering the statement, Fani-Kayode on his Twitter page described Buhari’s statement as a ‘despicable lie’ and offensive.

He wrote “One of the most wicked and despicable lies that @MBuhari has ever told is that the Nigerian Army was restrained when fighting the Biafrans during the civil war.

“This is a lie from the pit of hell and it is insulting and deeply offensive. We must learn from our history and never repeat its mistakes.

“Was the Asaba massacre in which thousands of young boys and old men were slaughtered an act of restraint? Or was the killing of 2 million innocent Biafran civilians and the starving to death of 1 million Biafran children an act of restraint?

“For God sake where is our humanity? Must we lie even about our history and try to revise it? No wonder they banned the teaching of history in our schools.

“Too much to hide! The truth is that if not for the fact that the same group of people have called the shots in our country since 1966 every single commander of the Nig. Army during the civil war, including @MBuhari, would have been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Int. Court of Justice at the Hague by now for the atrocities they commited against the Igbo race and the Biafrans during the civil war.I don’t need to be an Igbo to admit that.”

“Killings Must Be Addressed Carefully To Avoid Civil War” – Osinbajo

Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice-President of Nigeria, has said that the killings recorded around the country need to be addressed carefully to avoid another civil war.

Speaking at Greater Nigeria Pastors’ Conference in Osun on Friday, Osinbajo said Nigerians should stop reading religious and ethnic meanings to the killings.

He explained that those killing innocent citizens were not discriminatory in their approach.

“We must not allow the narratives being said about it (killings) to survive. We have to handle it carefully, we may put the country in a civil war if care is not taken,” the vice-president said.

He said there is a need to address the killings with a broader approach.

“I agree fully as far as security issues go that we should have a broader approach. There is no reason why there should not be a review. The president had said he would address it,” he said.

“Deeper Life Bible Church was attacked in the North in 2014 and 17 people were killed. Whatever is happening, we must take a broader look at it. As pastors, when mosques are attacked, we must also speak up. It is good that we also speak up against this as well.

“Our country can only be governed by the wisdom of God. We must deal with all issues with great care. In River Benue, virtually all the cattle want to go in there for water. In Taraba, the killer herdsmen and farmers they attacked are Muslims. It is not entirely fair to say that they are targeting Christians.

“Any herder found with weapon must be arrested. In the last few months, we have sent special forces to Benue and and Taraba. There is great determination to end the killings and hold accountable anybody arrested.”

Why Age Limit For Senate, Governorship Were Retained – Deputy Senate President

Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy president of the Nigerian Senate, has explained why the age limit for governorship and senate were retained in the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ bill recently signed into law.

His explanation is a direct response to the demands of the Not Too Young To Run Movement which on Friday, called on members of the National Assembly to review its vote on the age qualification for the senate and governorhip.

The head of the movement, Samson Itodo, said the review should be in tandem with its initial proposal which put the age qualification for governor and senate at 30 years.

It described the retention of the 35 years for both offices as “unfortunate and disappointing” as it urged the National Assembly to revisit its vote.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday gave his assent to the bill passed by the National Assembly last year.

Qualifying age for the Presidency, which used to be 40 years, has now been reduced to 35 with the age for governor and senate retained at 35 years contrary to the demands of the movement.

Mr Buhari said in the bill presented to him for assent, there was no reduction in the age requirement for the office of senators and governors, indicating that age would still be left at 35. He said he hoped it will be looked after eventually.

Mr Ekweremadu, on Friday, explained that the 35 years age qualification for the Senate and governorship was retained to correct the initial disparity in the 1999 Constitution between the age requirement for the Senate and the Presidency.

He said the National Assembly reasoned that going by the provisions of Section 146 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the president of the Senate could hold the office of the President for a period not exceeding three months should the offices of the President and Vice President be vacant at the same time for any reason.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, Mr Ekweremadu explained that Section 146 (1) provides that the Vice-President shall hold the office of President if the office of President becomes vacant by reason of death or resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity or the removal of the President from office for any other reason in accordance with section 143 of the Constitution.

“However, Section 146 (2) further provides that where any vacancy occurs in the circumstances mentioned in Sub-section 1 during a period when the office of Vice-President is also vacant, the President of the Senate shall hold the office of President for a period of not more than three months, during which there shall be an election of a new President, who shall hold office for the unexpired term of office of the last holder of the office’.

“So, since the President of the Senate, a Senator, could become an Acting President by happenstance, it is only right that the qualification for both offices are the same.

“However, the Not-Too-Young-To-Run amendment is just one giant step forward. It is not the end of the road, but just the beginning of the road. It is not an end in itself, but a means to an end.

“I believe that anyone, who is 18 years old and qualified to vote should also be qualified to stand for an election. This is our ultimate target and I believe we will get there. So, it is work in progress because constitution amendment is a continuum,” he said.

The deputy senate president urged the youths to mobilise into the political parties in their numbers to begin to influence party decisions, push for direct primary elections, internal democracy, level playing ground, and other reforms that will complement the provisions of the current millage achieved by way of the Not-Too-Young-To-Run amendment.

The police in Ekiti State have arrested the politician who allegedly masterminded the shooting at Kayode Fayemi’s campaign in Ekiti State on Friday.

”Four Years Ago, Nobody Was Sleeping With Two Eyes Closed In Abuja” Lai Mohammed Says

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says before the Buhari-administration came into power in 2015, insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja was so bad that people residing in the city could not sleep with their two eyes closed.

Lai said this on Friday after inspecting the venue that will be used to host UN World Tourism Organisation (UNTWO) commission for Africa meeting which will take place from June 4th to 6th at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.

But for the effort of this government mostly in the area of fighting insecurity, we won’t be hosting this meeting in Nigeria. When we were bidding to host this conference in 2016, I had to explain to them that the federal government of Nigeria was on top of the security situation in Nigeria. Four-five years ago, it would have been impossible to host this conference in Nigeria. I remember that four-five years ago, nobody in Abuja was sleeping with his or her two eyes closed. But we are very confident in holding this meeting here because of the success we have recorded in decapitating Boko Haram.” he said
