What I Sacrificed For My First Nollywood Role – Singer, Seyi Shay

Seyi Shay made a major move on her career in the Nigerian entertainment industry when she successfully landed a lead role in Biola Alabi’s yet to be released movie ‘Lara and the Beat’.

When the news came to limelight, there were Speculations that putting her music-making craft on hold for acting may come at a price.

However, in a chat with Showtime, Seyi Shay confirmed that venturing into Nollywood came with a huge price.

The singer said:-

“I had to leave my own work, my singing career for a month or two because the hours on set were very long so I couldn’t get to the studio to record my own song. I couldn’t do shows when I wanted to and I lost some money but I also made a great movie, so I’m happy”.

She confessed that though while on set filming, she nursed fears that the time she was spending out of music may have negative effects on her craft but was later grateful for her decision because it finally paid off on her brand.

“I was worried that time spent out of the music scene would work against me but thankfully it didn’t. Because this movie has added to my profile and my brand and you know by the time the movie comes out it will increase my popularity so it’s just refreshing to have something new added to my résumé”, she said.

She added that though her first experience was exhausting; she would probably take up more movie roles if they come her way.

“I will probably take up more movie roles. At first I said I would never act again because it’s so long and tiring. You know as a musician, a video for a song takes like 6 to 8 hours, so I was so exhausted but at the end I was thoroughly pleased with myself. So yes, I would do it again probably with the same production”, she concluded.

I Am A Small Girl With Big God – Toke Makinwa

Media personality Toke Makinwa expressed her feelings and showed gratitude how God almighty has been good to her.

According to her, My journey has been from broken to glory, from grass to greener pastures, from weak to strength, from unbelief to countless testimonies , from victim to victor from being the butt of jokes to influence.

She wrote on her social media:

My journey has been from broken to glory, from grass to greener pastures, from weak to strength, from unbelief to countless testimonies , from victim to victor from being the butt of jokes to influence. From broke to smiling to the bank.

I remember when I first charged half a million to attend an event, @swankyjerry and I laughed cos we didn’t think the client will pay but they did and now let’s just say it’s been all the way up I was called “everywhereyougo”, laughed at but somehow we built with every rock thrown at us.

Thank you to everyone who’s taking a chance with me
It’s not been easy, but when Jesus says yes, no man can say no. Thank God we don’t look like what we’ve been thru. I remember when I was adviced to withdraw in Uni, I remember when doors constantly closed in my face and I was constantly told this dream was not for me, I will cry to bed asking why me? I just want to be successful, I just want to put my father’s name in the big blue sky above, it’s unfair that he had to die before he truly lived. I just wanted more.

Nollywood movies have gone beyond Africa, the Nigerian movie industry is competing with the likes of Hollywood and Bollywood. The industry chunks out more than 500 movies monthly, no wonder we have been ranked as the 3rd film producing country in the World.

Nollywood has always had both good written and awful stories but this is not peculiar to the Nigerian film industry alone. We have seen or heard of so many movies with great story sense that are hard to forget. These movies were produced and shot during the time of low budget and lesser technology. In the Yoruba movie scene, Tade Ogidan's Owo Blow (1995) is one of the greatest Nigerian film and has recorded one of the largest sales in the Africa film market. Saworoide and Oleku by Tunde Kelani are also the type of movies you would love to watch over and over again.

I Didn’t Foresee The Responses To My Video, Falz Confesses

Popular rapper, Folarin Falana, aka Falz the Bahd Guy, has said that he did not foresee the magnitude of the responses to his latest video, This is Nigeria, saying the rejoinders have really encouraged him to continue the trend.

Falz said this on Tuesday in an interview with AFP.

He noted that Nigerians are ready for a return to the days of music maestro, Fela Kuti, when musicians used their high profile to address political and social issues.

Falz’s latest track This is Nigeria — an adaptation of US performer Childish Gambino’s This is America — has racked up more than four million views on YouTube in just two weeks.

In it, he highlights widespread violence and corruption in Africa’s most populous nation, in stark contrast to fellow artists and their fixation with wealth and status.

The 27-year-old performer acknowledged that his subject matter — from Boko Haram Islamists and disputes over land and water to crooked police and politicians — was controversial.

“But I didn’t foresee the magnitude of the response… This has really encouraged me to continue doing that,” he said.

“Everyone is carried away with our entertainment and enjoyment of life and we forget that a lot of things are really happening here…

“There are a lot of things that we need to constantly talk about so that somehow there should be a recognition of this… People feel that the Fela Kuti’s spirit needs to come back.”

Fela, the self-styled “Black President” and pioneer of Afrobeat, was known as much for his outspoken political and social views during years of military rule as for his music.

Falz’s real name is Folarin Falana. His father, the leading human rights lawyer Femi Falana, once represented Fela.

The rapper said his father, whose speeches are sampled at the beginning and end of “This is Nigeria”, had been a major influence.

Musicians had to recognize they also had a position of power, with a “huge voice” that should be used as a force for good.

Nigeria is entering a highly charged period before elections in February next year in which President Muhammadu Buhari hopes to secure a second term.

Already, the former military ruler’s record on tackling insecurity, cutting corruption and boosting the economy is coming under close scrutiny.

Until Buhari’s victory over Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, no opposition candidate had ever unseated an incumbent president at the ballot box in Nigeria.

Falz said it was important for the country’s massive youth population to understand they have the power to change their future, including the problems outlined in “This is Nigeria”.

“It’s a democratic system of government, it’s government of the people,” he said.

“So, if people don’t actually go out there to vote, we’re still going to be stuck in the same mess that we complain about.

“So, you have to go out there, register, get a PVC (permanent voters card) and make sure that when the election comes that you actually vote.”

Ironically, Fela’s son Seun Kuti — also a musician — this week appeared to suggest the opposite, urging people to be wary of the political process.

“Don’t let anyone force you to endorse their system until you are sure it represents you,” he said in a fiery post on his Instagram account.

“Time to cast a vote of no confidence in the political system and build our own! This is the task of the #liberationgeneration.”

We Are Not Withdrawing The ‘This Is Nigeria’ Video – Falz’s Management To MURIC

The management team of Nigerian singer Falz, have reacted to an ultimatum given to the singer to take down his ‘This is Nigeria’ video or face actions from them.

An Islamic group, Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC), yesterday released a statement ordering Falz to take down the video which they claim ridicules their religion due to some girls seen wearing hijab and dancing shaku shaku in the video.

Davido’s “Assurance”, Falz’s “This Is Nigeria” Lead Nigerian Songs Released In May

Davido’s song, ‘Assurance’ emerged as the hottest Nigerian song released last month, May 2018.

Following the Afrobeat song is the controversial song, ‘This is Nigeria’ by Falz. These songs and eight others was obtained from statistics from online downloads and streaming devices like iTunes, Spotify, Youtube, radio airplay and other download devices.

The list which was published in a magazine gave Assurance, the song which caught a buzz after the song owner Davido bought a Porsche for his girlfriend, Chioma on her birthday last month.

With this, Davido remains the hottest and perhaps the most bankable Nigeria music artiste as result of his feat last year wresting the pinnacle and bragging writes from his rival now friend, Wizkid.

The DMW label owner may just win the BET Int’l Act 2018 award holding later this month. Falz who is fast becoming the most dominant rapper cum entertainer in Nigeria, has his trending song, ‘This Is Nigeria’ as the second most downloaded song in May 2018.

The song was a subtle way of speaking out about the ills of the country which is laudable as musicians ought to do advocacy when the time arises.

The video though stoked controversy because of the use of hijab-wearing ladies dancing to the song beats.

Though the Censors board, NFVCB has come out that Falz didn’t bring the video for licensing, it may just have made the song more popular and arousing curiousity.

The third song is Baba by DJ Spinall Ft Kiss Daniel. Others on the list include Fake Love by Duncan Mighty Featuring Wizkid, Selense by Harrysong featuring Kiss Daniel & Reekado Banks, Olamide’s song, Kana made the list as the sixth others song released in May.

The rapper who is set to get married to his baby mama soon surprisingly didn’t get any award at Headies held last month despite his hardwork.

But Kana by Olamide Ft Wizkid is sure a dope song. The other last four songs are, Overload by Mr Eazi Ft Slimcase & Mr Real, 2geda by Korede Bello, Ebeano Internationally by Mr P (P Square) and My Dear by DJ Big N Ft. Don Jazzy & Kiss Daniel.

The list shows that Mr P’s solo career is gradually gaining momentum. Why not? He seems the most hardworking of the duo and has a dancing skill and themed song to explore.

Also Assurance which both audio and video got released on May 1st of currently has over 7million views on YouTube.

“I’m Forever Grateful To God That I Am Alive And Well” – Banky W Says As He’s Cured Of Cancer

Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi’s husband, musician Olubankole Wellington aka Banky W has revealed how he overcame his battle with cancer before his wedding.

The EME boss, who was just made the ambassador for Pink Oak Trust, said God and availability of sufficient funds saw him through his battle with the killer disease.

His words:-

“Many people know about my own battles with cancer. I’m forever grateful to God that I am alive and well, and that I was able to fund the treatment I needed.

Unfortunately, over 90,000 Nigerians die every year due to cancer. This is simply because they can’t afford to fight it. Treatment is expensive and so many people die because they’re just unable to pay for surgery, pills, chemo etc.

That has to change, and the more of us that contribute, the better. It would be great if one person donated N100 million. But it would be just as great, and even more powerful, if one million people gave N100 each.”

Linda Ikeji Slams Kemi Olunloyo And Others Who Doubt Her Success

Nigerian Ace Blogger Linda Ikeji has debunked rumours that she is not pregnant wearing a prosthetic baby bump as a journalist, Kemi Olunloyi had said.

The blogger took to Instagram to call out the journalist and others who had doubted her success.

She also debunked Twitter User, Gbenga Gold’s claim that she doesn’t own a house on Banana Island in the post.

She wrote on her Instagram Page:

Here’s the next thing I want to address. Most of the people who know me will tell you that I have a heart of gold and maybe that’s why God never stops blessing me. This woman (you know who…lol) has been trolling me for years and calling me all sorts of unprintable names which I have never responded to. But when she cried out for help last year, despite the abuses I’ve gotten from her, I sent money to her account. I harbor no hate for anyone, no matter what.

And I swear I would have sent more money to her if people around me hadn’t stopped me. I just felt pity for her that she was languishing in prison and no one to help her. And not only did I send money (which I did privately and she made public), I called a few people I know to see what they could do to help bring her out of prison. No matter what, she is a woman, and I am all about women supporting women.

She wrote that I am wearing a prosthetic baby bump…lol. Like I could get away with that in Nigeria? And some folks actually believe it…lol. If I couldn’t have a child, I would proudly adopt. Proudly. I love children so much. But fortunately, God blessed me with a womb to carry my own child.

I was just hiding the baby bump until I got to my second trimester before letting you amazing people know. I could have continued hiding it to be honest but I just couldn’t keep calm…lol. I’ve had the easiest pregnancy with no swelling and no issues and I thank God.

Lastly, here’s something I want to say to everyone. I remember when I bought my house in Banana Island in 2015, many didn’t believe it. In fact one tweet said ‘If you believe that Linda Ikeji owns a home in Banana Island, I seriously doubt your higher institution certificate’. That’s how much they doubted God’s blessings…lol
